About Me

I’m a data scientist, AI enthusiast, and quantitative finance specialist who has spent almost two decades exploring how technology can reshape financial markets. My passion for connecting academic research with real-world problem-solving has guided me through multi-asset and hedge funds, fintech and edtech startups, and my professorship, which allows me to encourage the new generations of college students to think beyond textbooks and algorithms, using data to drive innovation, challenge the status quo, and shape the future of finance and technology.

As Director of a data science consultancy, I lead multi-disciplinary teams in building and deploying advanced analytics solutions that drive measurable impact across industries. My expertise lies in designing quantitative models, AI-driven analytics, and scalable data workflows that enhance strategic decision-making, risk mitigation, and operational efficiency. I oversee the full lifecycle of data products—from research and development to deployment, ensuring organizations can extract meaningful insights from complex datasets. My team and I specialize in designing quantitative trading models, risk analytics platforms, and predictive investment frameworks that leverage Python, R, SQL-based databases, and cloud-based architectures (AWS, GCP, Azure). These solutions power applications in finance, technology, and real estate, supporting everything from portfolio optimization and systematic decision-making to customer analytics and automation.

With over 15 years of experience managing $1.6 billion across hedge fund, multi-asset, and derivatives strategies, I’ve developed several risk-factor models, asset allocation frameworks, and AI-powered decision systems that improve efficiency and performance. I have a track record of guiding companies through strategic AI adoption, ensuring they build solutions that are not only technically sound but also aligned with business objectives and long-term scalability.

In addition to my industry work, I serve as a Professor and Advisor at a leading university in California, where I have spent nearly seven years teaching machine learning, business analytics, quantitative finance, and data-driven real estate courses. My academic career started during the financial crisis with a focus on a quant finance program at a top German university, and I later pursued specialized leadership and data science studies at Stanford and UT Austin. Having mentored over 600 students and professionals keeps me excited about the evolving possibilities of AI, and I strive to create a collaborative environment that encourages critical thinking and experimentation (see my AI companion, Bjorn). As a long-standing holder of both CFA and FRM credentials, I remain committed to rigorous professional standards.

Outside of work, I’m a passionate motorcyclist and traveler who combines a German upbringing with a deep appreciation for cross-cultural experiences. I share my life with my wonderful Cuban wife, a practicing doctor whose insights into healthcare continually open my eyes to new ways data can drive meaningful change through technology. Whether I’m carving mountain roads on my BMW S1000RR, writing code in my computer lab, or standing in front of my undergraduate or master’s students with a whiteboard, I’m always seeking opportunities to make an impact.
